Rainey Center

Over the course of this Black History Month, the Joseph Rainey Center for Public Policy has highlighted the countless contributions of some of the many Black Americans who have made the United States of America a more perfect union. It is impossible to understand American history without understanding Black history. The United States is a better, stronger, and more innovative country as a result of the innumerable contributions made by Black Americans over the course of our great nation’s history.

While Black Americans have made progress since the founding of the United States when they were kidnapped and brought against their will as slaves, there remains much work to be done. Our namesake Congressman Joseph Rainey symbolizes the promise of the American Dream as well as how it remains unfulfilled for many.

Black History Month is an essential reminder of how Black Americans have and continue to make incredible contributions to American life, but these contributions are ongoing. Ultimately, while February has hopefully been a time to reflect on Black History, every month of every year, Black Americans continue to make history and those contributions should be honored and recognized here and now in the present, long before they are known as historical achievements.
